Our group was founded 25 years ago by Robert Headley at his home in Funtington and moved to the University in 2004. This special season continues our tradition of providing members with a rich feast of musical delights. Following her highly acclaimed presentation last March, Ukrainian concert pianist Tanya Ursova returns in January to continue her exploration of the origins of Russian piano music. This is followed in February by the University Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Crispin Ward, with world famous violinist Zoltan Takács who will perform Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. Also featured is the recorder virtuoso Piers Adams.
The many admirers of the Chichester Cathedral Choir will be delighted that assistant organist Tim Ravalde is bringing the six Lay Clerks in March to describe and perform works from the centuries’ old tradition of A Cappella Singing. This is followed in April by the annual Student Showcase Concert when six selected undergraduates compete for the coveted Robert Headley £1250 prize fund.
In May, the Lynden Cranham Ensemble explore in words and music the life and times of the 19th century cellist Robert Lindley who rose from humble beginnings to become a performer to royalty. And for our 25th Anniversary Buffet Concert in June we have invited the exciting Ruisi String Quartet, rapidly becoming nationally respected and admired after winning the Royal Philharmonic Society award for Young British String Players. Their programme includes String Quartets by Haydn, Schubert and Debussy.
Autumn brings a return of Roy Stratford who presents a lecture recital on Bach's Goldberg Variations. We then have remarkable flute virtuoso Alena Lugovnika who with Pavel Timofeyevsky impressed the Committee at the 2016 Prince’s Prize competition run by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Finally, by popular demand by our members, we have the return in November of virtuoso violinist Bogdan Vacarescu with concert pianist Julian Jacobson.
A season of great talent and variety to suit all musical tastes!
